Brucella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria. They are non-motile, non-encapsulated coccobacilli, and are the cause of brucellosis, a true zoonotic disease. Brucellosis is characterized by sweating and malaise. Symptoms begin as an acute febrile illness with few or no localized signs and progress, to a chronic stage with relapses of fever, weakness, sweats, vague aches and pains. Complications are rare but include subacute bacterial endocarditis, meningitis, encephalitis, neuritis, orchitis, cholecystitis, hepatic suppuration, and osteomyelitis. The presence of IgG antibodies is useful in the diagnosis of Brucellosis and indicates current or past infection. IgG levels are INCREASED during relapse.
Draw sample during the first week of illness and then 3-4 weeks later. Avoid lipemic or hemolyzed sample.
