B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) is a neuro-hormone secreted by the ventricles of the heart in response to excessive stretching of heart muscle and changes in pressure that occurs when heart failure develops or worsens. This test is used to help diagnose heart failure and to grade the severity of that heart failure. It is also used in Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor treatment follow up, since BNP also acts as a rennin inhibitor.
