Cholinesterase - Enzymatic activity , Serum

14 Day(s)

Reference Range

Cholinesterase is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of acetylcholine into acetate and choline. Dosing is recommended in the event of any suspicion of organophosphate intoxication (OP), with anticholinesterase activity: OP inhibits cholinesterase at cholinergic synapses and prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine. Dosing of cholinesterase also allows the evaluation of hypersensitivity of patients pre-operatively to muscle relaxation anaesthesia (succinylcholine) corresponding to a congenital deficit with reduced butyrylcholinesterase levels.
