Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) is an abnormal transferrin characterized by lowered concentrations of sialic acid chains. Transferrin is a plasma protein that carries iron through the bloodstream to the bone marrow, liver and spleen. This test is used to detect chronic alcohol consumption, since the high alcohol induces a RISE in the level of CDT.
