المجموعة المرجعية

Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound biosynthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It is acquired mostly through the diet. Carnitine plays a critical role in energy production, as it is required for the transport of long-chain fatty acyl co-enzyme A (CoA) esters into the mitochondria, where they are oxidized for energy. LOW serum levels are associated with reduced synthesis, excess excretion, or inadequate intake (malabsorption), which results in carnitine deficiency. Carnitine deficiency can cause myopathy, hypoglycemia, cardiomyopathy, fatty liver, or hyperammonemia. Other related tests: Carnitine, Free, Serum
