Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colorless liquid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. Its primary function is to cushion the brain within the skull and serve as a shock absorber for the central nervous system. It also circulates nutrients and chemicals filtered from the blood and removes waste products from the brain. Examining the fluid can be useful in diagnosing many diseases of the central nervous system including Multiple Sclerosis (MS). CSF contain a variety of substances particularly glucose, protein, and white blood cells from the immune system. Abnormal CSF analysis result may be due to many different causes including: multiple sclerosis, cancer, encephalitis, hepatic encephalopathy, Reye syndrome, hemorrhage around the brain and spinal cord, Guillain-Barre syndrome, syphilis, and meningitis due to bacteria, fungus, tuberculosis, or a virus.
State serum glucose level. Avoid blood contamination.
