Ceruloplasmin is an alpha2-globulin which plays a role in the body’s iron metabolism. It contains 95% of all the copper in the blood. Normally, ceruloplasmin concentration is very low in newborns and steadily increases with age. This test can be used along with one or more copper tests to help diagnose Wilson’s disease and evaluate copper metabolism. LOW ceruloplasmin levels are associated with Wilson’s disease, Menkes syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, overdose of Vitamin C, copper deficiency, and Aceruloplasminemia. HIGH levels are observed in acute and chronic inflammatory conditions, lymphoma, cirrhosis, poisoning with copper salts, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and pregnancy.
Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate from cells ASAP
