Dihydrotestosterone, Serum

6 Day(s)

Reference Range

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a biologically active metabolite of the hormone testosterone, formed by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, primarily in the prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands. In males, DHT is responsible for the formation of male sex-specific characteristics, including facial and body hair growth, physical changes during sexual maturation, and deepening of the voice. INCREASED levels of DHT in women may develop androgynous male secondary sex characteristics, including deepening of the voice and facial hair (hirsutism). Elevated levels may also indicate hypergonadism. DECREASED levels of DHT are associated with male pattern hair loss, prostate problems, and causes under virilization.
