Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that hydrolyzes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is mainly found at neuromuscular junctions and cholinergic synapses in the central nervous system. Acetylcholine plays a major role in neurological functions. HIGH levels of the enzyme are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. LOW levels are associated with Hairy-cell Leukemia and Thrombocytopenia.
