Reference Range

Gangliosides are a group of glycosphingolipids widely distributed in membrane components of the nervous system. They possess a common long chain fatty acid, but exhibit distinctive carbohydrate moieties containing one or more sialic acid residues. This test is used as a general screen for patients with neuropathy. It aids in monitoring changes in antibody levels before, during and after treatment, and aids in evaluating patients for neurological disorders such as lower motor neuron syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, other multifocal neuropathies and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with central nervous system involvement.
