Hepatitis A Virus Antibodies, Total, Serum

1 Day(s)

Reference Range

An epidemic viral infection transmitted by the fecal-oral route. Common in areas of poor hygiene. Caused by a picornavirus which is difficult to culture so diagnosis depends on serological analysis, notably the demonstration of specific IgM antibodies during the acute phase. These IgM antibodies disappear within 12 weeks and are replaced by IgG antibodies which are evidence of acquired immunity both following natural infection and vaccination.

Special Requirements

Specimen Preparation Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
