Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) is a defective RNA virus which depends on certain functions of the hepatitis B virus for its replication. Therefore, HDV infection is only possible in subjects simultaneously or previously infected with HBV. The HDV antigen is usually detectable over a period of one week to one month during the acute phase.
