Natural killer (NK) cells are white blood cells that kill tumor- and virus-infected cells as part of the body’s immune system. They are best characterized by CD16 and CD56 surface markers. NK cells are thought to be important for tumor surveillance. Their numbers tend to RISE in the peripheral blood during viral infection. In addition, increased NK cell counts have been implicated in some cases of femal infertility and abortion.
