Alpha-2-Macroglobulin is a glycoprotein synthesized in the liver and is a major component of the alpha-2 band in protein electrophoresis. It is able to inactivate an enormous variety of proteinases, and also functions as an inhibitor of coagulation by inhibiting thrombin, and inhibitor of fibrinolysis by inhibiting plasmin. INCREASED levels are seen in nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, and during pregnancy.
