Trans-Muconic acid is a metabolite of benzene in humans. The determination of its concentration in urine is therefore used as a biomarker of occupational or environmental exposure to benzene. The toxicity of benzene, a chemical used in many industrial processes, involves bone marrow depression and leukemogenesis and is associated with damage to multiple classes of hematopoietic cells and hematopoietic functions. This test is therefore, the best marker for benzene poisoning. Excretion is increased by smoking.
