Vanillylmandelic Acid (VMA) is an end-stage metabolite of the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine. It is produced via intermediary metabolites. VMA is found in the urine, along with other catecholamine metabolites. This test is used as a marker for three types of tumors: pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma. Patients with essential hypertension occasionally have borderline increased values for urinary VMA. Other related tests: Catecholamines and Metanephrines.
State 24-hour urine volume. Observe special diet three days prior to testing. Avoid: alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco (including nicotine patch), bananas, citrus fruits, chocolate, carbonated drinks, walnut, candy, mint, jelly, gelatins, cheese, and vanilla. Avoid excessive exercise and over-the-counter drugs such as Aspirin.
