Excessive amounts of amylase in body fluids may be abnormal in certain malignancies involving the lungs, ovaries, prostate, and the pancreas. For instance, high amounts of amylase in pleural cavity results in pleural effusion as a complication of acute pancreatitis. See Amylase, Serum.

Special Requirements

Draw serum for comparison. Benign ovarian cyst fluids may have significant amylase activity Avoid lipemic samples. Oxalateand citrate depress results.
