Urine amylase should be assayed in parallel with serum amylase to help in the diagnosis of certain diseases such as hyperamylasaemia. This test is also used to help evaluate kidney function, since HIGH levels of urine amylase are associated with decreased kidney function. Also, this test is very useful in the diagnosis of macroamylasaemia since high serum levels with low urine levels can eliminate this disease. See Amylase, Serum.
