Apolipoprotein A1, also known as APOA1, is the major protein component of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL). APOA1 promotes cholesterol efflux from tissues to the liver for excretion. It provides structural integrity to lipoproteins and shields the hydrophobic lipids at their center. The concentration of APOA1 can be measured directly and tends to rise and fall with HDL levels. A DECREASE in APOA1 represents a major marker of a risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), and peripheral vascular disease. APOA1 may be decreased with chronic renal failure, familial hypoalphalipoproteinemia, and uncontrolled diabetes

Patient must be fasting 12-14 Hrs. Separate serum and refrigerate at 2-8 °C. Stable up to 3 days. Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
