Asialoglycoprotein receptor is an abundant hetero-oligomeric endocytic receptor that is predominantly expressed on the sinusoidal surface of the hepatocytes. It binds galactose-terminal glycoproteins, thus removes those proteins from circulation, which are then acted upon by hepatocyte lysosomes. Asialoglycoprotein receptor antibodies are found predominantly in patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis, primary or secondary liver malignancies, or connective-tissue disease.
